Newson often evokes the need for supplementation in vitamin B9 (folic acid) during pregnancy. We know less that the vitamin D status is also very important, and that it is crucial to maintain a satisfactory rate.
Vitamin D is essential to human health, in particular for bones, muscle contraction, nerve conduction and general cellular function.Low vitamin D blood concentrations in pregnant women have been associated with pregnancy complications.A recent inventory, carried out by the independent medical organization Cochrane, had led to the conclusion that the supplementation of pregnant women in vitamin D reduces "probably" the risk of pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, low weight of the baby toBirth and serious postpartum hemorrhage. It will be added that vitamin D is essential to the normal development of bones in the fetus.
Vitamin D is synthesized ("produced") by the body from a derivative of cholesterol, under the action of ultraviolet rays (UVB).This is the reason why it is explained that it is so important to expose yourself as often as possible in natural light;and that in regions where the sunshine is low, the risk of vitamin D deficiency increases considerably. It can also be supplied by food, especially fatty fish (and their oils) and dairy products. And in the event of a deficit, it is useful to take supplementation.
Regarding pregnant women, real vigilance is necessary, as this Quebec team (Laval University) shows. She analyzed the results of two studies carried out in Canada, in order to estimate the daily vitamin D intake from food and supplementation in pregnant women, and then seek the association between these contributions and the concentrationsvitamin D blood from the first trimester of pregnancy until childbirth.
One of the major lessons underlines the fact that there is "a direct relationship between the blood concentration in vitamin D and the contributions from supplementation. This provides almost twice as much vitamin D as diet.It is not impossible to reach blood concentrations in vitamin D through food, but it is not easy ".
Outside supplements, the deficit is more frequent in pregnant women who have already had children, within the less favored social categories, as well as in women who did not take multivitamin supplements before pregnancy.
The authors add: "All pregnant women should make sure you consume enough vitamin D to meet their needs and those of the baby. They are recommended to take a supplement daily to cover their folic acid and iron needs. This recommendation could be extended to include vitamin D in sufficient dose ”.
