Symptoms related to COVID-19 differ from one person to another. But among the most frequent (and the most annoying) we find anosmia.Either, the loss of smell. If it is not a serious health symptom, one can easily understand why it is binding on a daily basis.Especially since some patients take months to regain their sense of perception of odors.Fortunately, research is progressing on the subject. And a team of French scientists has just tested a surprising method to help patients find their smell. We explain to you.

Anosmia after the COVID: why does it last a long time?

Anosmia is not a rare symptom in people with a big cold.As the Inserm explains, when you have a plugged nose, the odorous molecules cannot enter it to reach olfactory receptors.Result, we no longer feel anything.

But what is surprising with the covid is that many patients with anosmia have a clear nose.Inserm researchers explain this by the ability of the virus to enter our olfactory neurons. The COVVI-19 "infects these sensory cells, multiplies and leads to destruction their" eyelashes ", outgrowths which carry olfactory receptors. It is therefore first of all that the problem comes from: more olfactory eyelashes, more smell! But that's not all.The coronavirus also infects cells adjacent to neurons and leads to inflammation and disorganization of the mucosa and the olfactory nervous system, "they say.

According to scientists, once housed in these cells, the virus "seems to be able to persist there for several months".This is why patients with COVID-19 can take several weeks to find smell."Especially since once completely rid of the virus, the body still has to replace damaged olfactory cells during new infection, generated from a stock of stem cells.", They add.

According to a study conducted on more than 1,100 people infected with COVVI-19, by Foch Hospital (Suresnes) and the University of Mons in Belgium, 75 to 85% of patients seem to recover their olfactory capacities two months after the endillness. But other studies, including one published in the Journal of the American Medicine Association (JAMA) last June, agree that the majority of patients find their smell after four months. For some, this symptom can last up to six months, or even until twelve months.

Anosmia after the covid: What if cold was the solution?

Could the cold help anosmic patients to find smell faster? This is a question on which a French team of the CHU and the University of Reims have looked into.In partnership with the Cryotera cryotherapy center, they have conducted amazing research: exhibiting people with extremely low temperatures (-60 ° C to –110 ° C) during cryotherapy sessions (as a reminder, it isa treatment consisting in applying cold on an area of the body or on the whole body).

They discovered that patients who had followed cryotherapy sessions had found their smell at the end of treatment. In addition, they have seen the unpleasant ghost smells disappear from which they suffered. This is Phantosmia: a phenomenon of olfactory hallucination caused by the loss of smell.

To achieve these results, published in The Journal of Integrative and Complementary Medicine, the researchers evaluated the olfactory capacities of the patients on a scale of 1 to 100, before and after the cryotherapy sessions, as well as a week later. They then compared this data to those collected from patients who had not been subjected to cold.Cryotherapy has proven to be an effective treatment against anosmia.Researchers consider these results as satisfactory.
