What is an APHTE?

When the canker sores invade their mouths, eating, speaking becomes painful. In France, almost one in five people regularly suffer from canker sages. In most cases, the canker sores disappear after a few days. But when they come back constantly, they can be the sign of a more serious illness.

APHTES or APHTERS STOMATITES are small painful ulcers from 2 to 6 mm.Their shape is rounded, with a yellow base and red edges. They appear on the gums, under the language or inside the cheeks.

APHTE is a dermatological disorder that reaches the oral mucosa. This mucous membrane looks like the skin: there is a layer of cells that overlap (epithelium), nerve endings, temperature sensors, pain and pressures as well as many blood vessels. Some areas also have a layer of fat.An canker sore occurs when a small ship clogs, an ulceration appears then a necrosis, which ends up creating a small hole. The higher the artery, the greater the necrotic area, the greater the canker sore.

When the canker sore is commonplace, it generally heals itself in eight to ten days. But when it comes to giant canopies (3% of cases), healing is longer.Giant canopies require corticosteroid treatment. In some people, these small ulcers can also become chronic. They complicate daily life.Eat food, absorb liquids...then becomes embarrassing.

An embarrassment to speak and eat

APHTES are neither infectious nor contagious and do not constitute a threat to health, except when they are revealing of a disease.Their only problem is that they cause pain for at least three to four days and recur frequently.

Serious illnesses can be accompanied by canker sores. These are general infections, including cancers or AIDS.These important canopies go so far as to invade the whole mouth, preventing food.

Buccal lesions: Take the right diagnosis

APHTES are among the pathologies of the mouth most known to the general public and sometimes, we can wrongly attribute an ulceration to an canker sore. This is the case of Gisèle.His general practitioner had previously diagnosed him with canker sores. But despite the treatments, the symptoms have persisted. Her doctor then turned him to a specialist who made a new diagnosis: Gisèle actually suffers from a lichen plan.

"The Lichen Plan is the most frequent and unknown mouth disease," explains Dr. Isabelle Gorin, dermatologist, "when patients have a lichen plan, they can arrive with a diagnosis of canker sores as long as their lichenplan or erosive, they can come with the diagnosis of bubble disease...So the diagnoses are not made ".Diagnostic errors all the more damaging as the Lichen Plan can have very serious consequences.

"The lesions are extremely invasive. They can touch the bone, the lymph nodes, and distribute to the entire organization and be quite formidable, "confirms Dr. Gorin.Only 3% of lichens plans spontaneously.

Heal

Once the canker sores are there, there are above all small ways: gargling, anti-twos and ointments.Caution before using anesthetic solutions which certainly decrease pain and irritation but at the same time, numb reflexes and can therefore prove to be dangerous if you eat just after application.Homeopathy or herbal medicine are also very used.

In some people, canker sores appear chronically.Local treatments are no longer sufficient and you must then consult to have suitable care.

The causes of this condition remain unknown, but there are still some triggers: the most frequent are physical fatigue, stress and allergies or sensitivities to food, such as citrus, pineapple, dairy products, vinegar...

There are other factors that can promote the occurrence of canker sores: iron deficiencies, folic acid and various vitamins;also cited, hormonal changes in the menstrual cycle and everything that can attack the inside of the mouth.

APHTES can be triggered by certain cancer treatments, including chemotherapy. At the Curie Hospital, a consultation of nurses is organized for the management of these side effects.

Oral lesions are among the most common side effects during chemotherapy. This treatment causes canopy because chemotherapy attacks of rapid division cells.Rapid division cells in the body are the cells of the mucous membranes and the cells of the immune system. And if the patient has a deficiency in mucous cells, that is to say protectors of the mouth, and a deficiency in immune cells, this creates an environment conducive to aphtosis.

Having canker sores can disrupt diet, patient speech, but it can also cause fatigue, and sometimes important psychological damage.

Daily mouthwashes and treatments to improve the immune system are then prescribed to patients to avoid the appearance of new lesions.
